Stunning Southwestern Horse Art for Zia Equestrian Logo

May 19, 2023

The Zia (sun) is a beloved Native American symbol that has been used for centuries to represent the interconnectedness of the four seasons, directions, times of day, and stages of life. It symbolizes balance, harmony and unity of all living beings; values shared by both the Southwestern culture and the dressage world.

The moment Gina asked me to infuse Southwestern art and culture into her dressage logo, all cylinders started firing and I could envision creating this wildly colorful, Kokopelli inspired, Native American patterned horse while on our call.

I really wanted this logo to give the impression of a continuous ‘full circle’ between the horse and the Zia symbol to evoke a sense of oneness since the values so closely coincide. I also wanted to lean into the Southwestern art traditions and create a more abstract and stylized horse that would still evoke a ‘hint’ of FEI Warmblood into the art.

The owners of this stunning southwestern horse logo originated from New Mexico, and Zia Equestrian is now located in Aiken, SC.

Ruidoso Downs Race Track is located in the pine dotted city of Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico. Horse racing and rodeo has been a part of the city’s history since the 1840’s, when residents of the area and local ranch hands would come together for friendly competition and entertainment. The world renowned Ruidoso Downs Race Track started in a farmer’s cornfield, where Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds from across the United States began to gather to race. This racetrack is definiately worthy of a much grander logo than racehorse clip art.

The only track of its kind in the United States and Europe, Ruidoso Downs Race Track offers a separate straight track for Quarter Horses and a traditional oval for Thoroughbreds. Priding itself on its homey feel, visitors can enjoy watching the horse races every Friday through Sunday during racing season.

When the racing is over for the day, visitors can try their luck in the track’s Billy the Kid Casino. Events like the All American Cowboyfest, complete with live music and a rodeo, also call Ruidoso Downs Race Track home. However, the track is best known for the All American Futurity-the richest race in Quarter Horse racing.

It’s the goal of every Quarter Horse jockey, owner, and trainer to become the All American Futurity champion.

Generic Racehorse Clip Art Logo Options Prompts Ruidoso Downs Race Track to Contact EQ Graphics

The board at Ruidoso Downs Race Track had worked with a handful of large graphic design firms who simply usedracehorse clip art before they contacted us about creating a custom logo for the track’s rebranding efforts. The generic racehorse clip art style logos they were presented with didn’t do justice to the track’s reputation as a premier horse racing destination.

Our artists created a vector style design of a Quarter Horse thundering down the track, complete with padded noseband, blinders, and a neatly perched jockey. Care was taken to render the horse in a way that the American Quarter Horse breed characteristics were instantly recognizable, and the image was up to par with industry standards without looking likeracehorse clip art. We used a bold but uncomplicated serif font to promote ease of reading for the business name, but to maintain focus on the line art racehorse design.

Although we created the design in silver foil, it can be displayed in a variety of colors-and the vector style design was created with ease of resizing in mind. These design styles are ideal for non-racehorse clip art logos that will be used on items of a variety of sizes. The Ruidoso Downs Race Track logo we created looks as good on a billboard or tote board as it does printed on postcards and betting slips.
